It is getting much easier to recycle old electronics - but do you know which companies are making "greener" electronics right out of the box? Well Greenpeace can help, because they have recently updated their Electronics Scorecard - a program that takes a look at companies recycling policies, hazardous materials use and information disclosure to the consuming public.
The guide won't tell which is the greenest product, but it will help you to shop from the company that is doing it right and which products that will ultimately cause the least harm to the planet and to your family.
In the latest guide Samsung and Toshiba are tied for first place, with scores of 7.7 out of 10. Both companies are brining products to the market that are free from the worst chemicals.
Samsung's new LCD panels are now free from PVC (polyvinyl chloride) plastic and all their new mobile phones have circuit boards that are mainly free of brominated flame retardants (BFR's).
Toshiba has made commitments to phase out PVC's and BRF's from their whole product range by 2009 and offers laptops whose circuit boards are free from BFR's. They also offer EcoMark-certified products made without PCV.
Greenpeace noted that Panasonic, Philips and Nintendo have the most room for improvement - Nintendo coming in lowest of all. So when it comes time to upgrade your cell phone, tv or home computer, check out the list to see what is in - and what is not in your new electronics.
and if we like it, we'll tell
everyone about it!
